In their revision of the Dutch avifaunal list, Sangster et al. 1999 advocate the phylogenetic species concept and claim that this view is more compatible with evolutionary relationships than the traditional biological species concept. The authors criticise the reproductive isolation principle of the biological species concept and propose diagnosability as the alternative criterion. Their viewpoint is in turn criticised below
