Voous K.H. (1948) Het voorkomen van het Gewone en het Vale Stormvogeltje, Hydrobates p. pelagicus (L.) en Oceanodroma l. leucorhoa (Vieill.), in Amsterdam. ARDEA 36 (4): 265-268
The occurrence of Hydrobates pelagicus and Oceanodroma leucorhoa in Amsterdam in very exceptional places (2 specimens of both species in the Amsterdam Museum: one specimen of Oceanodroma caught on the roof of a tram-car just after its arrival in the depot) is correlated (1) with heavy western gales, which have blown the birds into the interior (wind force resp. 12, 9-10, 8 Beaufort); (2) by the use of a sea-ship as a way of artificial transport: one specimen of Hydrobates is caught alive on board of a sea-ship in the Amsterdam harbour. The stomach of this bird contained still the fragments of small Cephalopods. Occurrences along the ;eastern coast of the IJsselmeer (Kampen) do not show a correlation with bad weather conditions, although the prevailing more or less strong winds during the days of observation come from western directions (wind force resp. 5-6, and 2-7 Beaufort). Including the Amsterdam records there are 14 records of Oceanodroma along the IJsselmeer coast, as against 3 of Hydrobates. All records fall between Sept. 11th and Dec. 14th.
