Kalchreuter H. (1991) On the impact of hunting on goose populations - a literature search. ARDEA 79 (2): 211-216
Most Northern Hemisphere goose species are subject to human persecution. Scientific studies on the impact of shooting are, however, rather scanty. Thorough investigations on the dynamics of populations under different hunting pressure provide some insight in how far hunting losses may be compensated. Hunting losses may generally increase overall mortality in geese. There is however evidence of density-dependent regulation of reproduction, and by this mechanism goose populations are able to compensate losses to a certain degree. The effects of different shooting practises are explained by several examples of Eurasian and North American goose species.
